Given the nature of the world we live in and the shift in the dynamic across every area of life, one trend that picked up serious traction this last year has been athleisure. For those unfamiliar with the term athleisure and it’s history, it refers to a mix of casual and sports clothing, worn for multiple purposes. As the pandemic swept across the entire world in 2020, people found themselves confined to their homes with little to no boundaries for different areas of work. Garages became gyms, bedrooms became workspaces, and the list goes on. Here are some reasons why Athleisure has grown popular in the last year:
Comfort is possibly the single biggest reason for boosting its popularity sky-high. As people started mixing and matching clothes, sportswear manufacturers saw potential in designing their clothes to suit casual needs. Since you can wear athleisure anywhere and anytime, it appeals to most people. Combine this with the fact that these are comfortable and cozy, and you have yourself a winning formula. These clothes are acceptable at social events and even at some workspaces.
The level of innovation that athleisure has seen in the recent past has made it a crowd favorite. While it was founded on necessity and desperation, this kind of clothing has since evolved to become a fashion statement in itself. Athleisure clothing tends to be sweat-proof, wrinkle-free and comes with extra stretch. Add to this the body-fitting nature of these clothes, and you have something that everyone can like, no matter what.
Influencers and Social Media
We all know the power that influencers and social media platforms have on people and brands. The same applies to trends like these. Celebrities around the world have switched to casual-sport clothing. It has, in turn, influenced a large demographic of their fans to do the same. Designer yoga pants, joggers, hoodies, and gym tees worn by celebrities like Cara Delevinge, Kendall Jenner, and Kanye West, to name a few, have given Athleisure a significant boost in the clothing industry. Even social media influencers, big or small, have garnered a lot of attention for their laid-back lifestyle, where comfy clothing forms a huge part.
Pivot in the market
Although it started as a trend, most clothing brands have made it a point to either pivot completely or cater to athleisure in one way or another. The fashion industry has been playing catch-up to the sportswear industry ever since this shift. Brands like Levi’s, Abercombie & Fitch, American Eagle, and even luxury brands like Louis Vuitton have pivoted their focus to also cater to athleisure. It has made the trend even more stable and contributes to why its popularity has surged in the last year.
It would be unfair to call this a trend, given how deep it has gotten into the clothing industry. While some skeptics speculate this to be a bubble waiting to pop, the numbers say otherwise. Athleisure is a movement and something that is here to stay. To those who still say no to athleisure, “If you can’t beat ’em, join ’em.”
